Field of Dreams Relocation

The Town of Devon is proposing the relocation of the Field of Dreams, Devon’s south ball diamonds this fall to make room for future commercial/industrial growth on the land at the corner of HWY 19 and 60. The proposed plan will see the ball diamonds moved west of HWY 60 to a parcel of Town-owned land.

To accommodate Devon’s ball diamonds users, the Field of Dreams will remain open until the end of the 2020 season.

Bringing development to Devon continues to be a priority of Council and the lands the Field of Dreams currently occupies is one of the most viable places to bring commercial/industrial growth due to its proximity to Highway 19, Highway 60 and the Devon Business Park.

Update: June, 2022

Paragon Ballpark is in the final stages of landscaping and preparation before being ready to open this summer. A grand opening event is scheduled for July 22, 2022 for residents to come check them out!

Baseball Field FAQs

When the Field of Dreams was originally constructed it was supposed to be temporary as this land was always intended to be used for future non-residential development.

The Town is now looking for a permanent location for the Field of Dreams and the land west of HWY 60 that borders the future HWY 60 interchange fits the needs of the diamonds.

The proposed plan will see the Field of Dreams closed at the end of the 2020 ball season.

  • With the shutdown of the Imperial Gas Plant, the Town has been striving to increase its non-residential tax assessment base.
  • The increase in assessment in non-residential development in this area will help offset the Town’s residential taxes.
  • Council directed that the Town start strategically buying lands and to promote economic development by attracting new business development which brings in the non-residential assessment base needed to help pay for the services to residents and potentially create local job opportunities.
  • The Town is strategically meeting with new developers to assist development in the area.
  • The current conceptual plan is designed to have minimal impact on the wetlands in the future home of the ball diamonds. The Town has already consulted and will continue to work with wetland experts during detailed engineering and obtain all federal and provincial permits required for construction.
  • By zoning this land for recreational use, the Town is doing its part to preserve and protect the wetlands in this area and plans to improve them as a feature in the future for users to enjoy in the new diamonds.

The future highway alignment will not affect the ball diamonds and in fact, once complete will benefit the diamonds through improved access.

  • This area will be zoned Direct Control which means that Council will decide what type of development can go on the land at their discretion after considering all benefits to the community.
  • The overall goal of the project is to spur local economic development in this area through commercial/light industrial growth.

The Town is including the Maskwâcis Nations in the consultation process as it moves through the preliminary phases of this project to ensure it is upholding its Treaty responsibilities.
